वैदिक काल में स्त्रियों को ज्ञान, कला के क्षेत्र में शिक्षा दी जाती थी। ऋग्वेद में स्त्रियों के पास विवाह संबंधी अधिकार भी प्राप्त था। वैदिककालीन बहुत सी विदुषियों ने शास्त्रार्थ में पुरुषों को पराजित किया था। किसी भी देश के विकास में नारी का योगदान महत्वपूर्ण होता है। मानव जीवन का प्रत्येक क्षेत्र नारी के अभाव में अपूर्ण हैं। सृष्टि की कल्पना भी नारी के बिना अधूरी हैं। नारी गृहस्थ जीवन का केन्द्र बिन्दु है ही, समाज का भी महत्वपूर्ण अंग है। नारी के व्यक्तित्व ने साहित्य को हर युग में प्रभावित किया ळें नारी के इस महान स्वरूप का दर्शन वैदिककाल से दिखायी देता है। विश्व साहित्य की प्राचीनतम कृति ऋग्वेद में कहा गया है कि “पिता, पुत्र और पुत्री के साथ सम्पूर्ण आयु व्यतीत करता हुआ सुख का अनुभव करता है, दोनों ही उसके लिए सुवर्णवत् हैं।“ साहित्य समाज का दर्पण माना गया है जो कुछ समाज में घटित होता है, वही सब साहित्य में देखने को मिलता हैं। नारी जीवन के संदर्भ में भी सच्ची अवधारणा तत्कालिक साहित्य के माध्यम से ही संभव है। संस्कृत साहित्य में भी वैदिक काल से लेकर वर्तमान काल तक नारी की स्थिति के बारे में बहुत कुछ लिखा गया हैं। साहित्य पढ़ने से ही हमें उस समय में नारी की स्थिति के बारे में पता लगता है।
