Paper Title:
Acute effects of sub- lethal intoxication with hybrid pesticide on behaviour and haematological parameters in walking catfish, Clarias batrachus (Linnaeus, 1758).
Now- a- days, to increase the spectrum of action of various pesticides being used in agricultural practices, development of combination pesticides is in trend. However, the toxic impact of the hybrid pesticide on non- target organisms can not be predicted by their individual effects. So, present study aimed to investigate the effects of acute exposure with sub- lethal concentration of a hybrid pesticide containing chlorpyrifos (50 %) and cypermethrin (5 % EC) on Clarias batrachus. Healthy fish of uniform size and weight were procured from local market in Ranchi and were kept for acclimatization to laboratory conditions for 2 weeks. Fish were fed with commercial fish food and water in the aquaria was changed daily with regular siphoning off of wastes. For experimentation, 10 fish were divided into two groups. Group I fish served as control, whereas group II fish were intoxicated with sub- lethal concentration of test chemical (1/5th of reported 96 h LC50; 1.2 µL/L of water) for 96 hours. Fish were studied for post- intoxication alterations in behaviour and haematological parameters. Treated group fish exhibited altered breathing, hyperactivity which was turned to lethargy with time, increased mucus secretion, loss of pigmentation and withering of fins and skin. On haematological analysis, exposure with test chemical resulted in increased level of haemoglobin and TEC (P<0.001), which can be a compensatory response against toxicant induced stress. Stained blood smear of treated group fish showed altered morphology of erythrocytes, such as, anisocytosis, hypochromic condition, abnormal shaped cells, nuclear and membrane deformities, vacuolization and presence of lobopodium. Morphological alterations indicated the disturbances in physiological activity of the fish. So, keeping in view the toxicity caused by hybrid pesticide to the hardy fish like Clarias batrachus, its detrimental effects on health of aquatic ecosystem and other non- target organisms can be extrapolated.
