Abstract: Background: Exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) for 6 months is considered a major public health intervention to reduce the escalating child mortality of neonates and infants in low and middle-income countries. This study is aimed to assess knowledge, attitudes, and practice (KAP) toward EBF and identify factors associated with exclusive breastfeeding. Method: The study was conducted at Government medical college Nagpur, a tertiary care centre in Maharashtra. We interviewed 64 Postnatal patients delivered in GMCH by using 2 questionnaires proforma to know regarding knowledge, attitudes, and practice (KAP) towards EBF. Result: The majority of lactating mothers (95.9 %) have heard about EBF, (62.5 %) knew that EBF should be practised for at least six months, (54.6%) replied that breast milk should be started immediately after birth within an hour, about (56.2%) understand the importance of the 1st breast milk or colostrum. The majority of mothers 67.10% agreed that introducing colostrum is important for the baby and 59.3% agreed that breast milk for a newborn within an hour after birth is important. Conclusion: Breastfeeding strategies need to be improved and scaled up, especially in early breastfeeding initiation and EBF. There is also a need to raise community awareness and education about the benefits and the adverse effects of mixed feedings.
Keywords: Keywords: Exclusive breastfeeding, Knowledge, Attitude, Practice.
