Abstract: ABSTRACT Background and Objective: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common problem associated with ageing. In this study we aim to assess the prevalence and determinants of OSA in an elderly population visiting OPD of a geriatric speciality hospital. Material and Method: A total of 120 elderly (age>60 years; mean age 71.63±7.28 years; 53.3% males) visiting OPD of a geriatric hospital for routine check-up were enrolled in the study. Age, sex, anthropometry and medical history was recorded followed by screening for sleep apnea risk using Berlin questionnaire. Patients screened as high-risk were subsequently subjected to Polysomonographic assessment. Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI) >5 was considered as OSA. AHI 5-10, 10-30 and >30 were considered as mild, moderate and severe apnea. Chi-square, Independent samples ‘t’-test and ANOVA were used to compare the data. Results: A total of 49 (40.8%) were screen positive. Prevalence of OSA was 39.2%. OSA was significantly associated with male sex, higher BMI, larger WC, smoking, tobacco chewing, hypertension and dyslipidemia were significantly associated with occurrence of OSA. Prevalence and severity of dyslipidemia was significantly associated with BMI, waist circumference, tobacco chewing, hypertension and dyslipidemia. Conclusion: Almost two-fifth of elderly had OSA, it was significantly associated with male sex, obesity, smoking, tobacco use, hypertension and dyslipidemia.
