Abstract: After a decade following the first legal action forbidding manual cleaning of human excreta, the study tries to uncover the lived realities of Manual Scavengers of India engaged in diverse cleaning tasks in the national capital. The study comprises 65 private interviews with men and women who are involved in a variety of scavenging tasks, such as cleaning streets, manholes, and public restrooms. The observation takes into account the issues of workplace safety, medical support, access to protective gear, and rehabilitation for female employees. The paper, in this course of inquiry, tries to prove that the legal subjectivity of Manual Scavengers by the Indian Legal system lacks the fundamental social imagination of "purity and pollution". This gap in legal ideography is reflected in the limited definition of Manual Scavengers, hazardous cleaning, and rehabilitation in the legal provisions.
