Introduction
The restoration of root canal treated teeth encounter problems due to loss of tooth structure by caries, trauma, fracture, previous restoration, all of these decrease the fracture resistance of the tooth. Clinicians often get confused regarding the most appropriate way to restore a tooth following root canal treatment. Some of the factors such as residual tooth volume, tooth location, number of proximal contacts, timing of the definitive restoration and the presence of cracks, have been reported to influence restoration and tooth survival. Improper restoration after root canal treatment contributes to one of the reasons for tooth fracture and may result in tooth loss. It is indicated that restorations enhance structural integrity there by increasing the prognosis of endodontically treated teeth exposed to heavy masticatory loading forces.
Aim
The aim of this survey was to determined the awareness, knowledge and current opinion concerning the restoration of endodontically treated tooth among the dental practitioners in south Chennai (Zone 5)
Methodology
This cross sectional survey was conducted during February2023 with the self-administered pretested, structured and close-ended questionnaire was constructed based on previously conducted studies, and common question in their day to day clinical practices in restoring endodontically treated tooth. The questionnaire was shared in physical forms personally by visiting various dental clinics in South Chennai and responses were obtained from 100 participants. The data was analysed using IBM SPSS version 21 (SPSS version 21.0; IBM corporation, Armonk, NY, USA) statistical software. Statistical significance was set at 0.05 levels. Normality distribution test resulted in p-value<0.05. Frequency distribution with percentage was used for categorical variables. To analyse the association between categorical variables Chi-square test was used.
Results
The response rate of the participants in the present survey was satisfactory. Majority of the participants had good knowledge regarding restoration of endodontically treated teeth. The questionnaire was circulated among 105 dentists and 100 responded. It gives a response rate of 98%. The Chi square test results showed that there was a significant difference among most of the variables on post endodontic restoration.
Conclusion
The current opinion regarding restoration of endodontically treated tooth is based on the amount of remaining residual tooth structure and to restore the form and function of the tooth in arch. Preservation of healthy tooth structure especially peri cervical dentin prevents the fracture of endodontically treated tooth and use of endo crowns favors this factor.
