Abstract: Effective solid waste management is crucial for urban sustainability, public health, and environmental preservation. This study aims to assess the suitability of current solid waste management practices in major Indian cities. We employ a comprehensive framework that incorporates waste generation rates, collection efficiency, recycling and disposal methods, and public awareness. Data were gathered through surveys, interviews, websites and municipal records in fourteen representative cities. Our findings reveal significant disparities in waste management practices across cities, with variations in infrastructure, policy implementation, and citizen participation. While some cities exhibit commendable waste reduction and recycling initiatives, others struggle with inadequate resources and infrastructure. The study identifies key challenges, including improper disposal, lack of segregation, and limited recycling facilities. In conclusion, this suitability evaluation provides valuable insights into the strengths and weaknesses of solid waste management practices in major Indian cities. It underscores the need for integrated approaches, policy enhancements, and community engagement to achieve sustainable waste management and a cleaner, healthier urban environment.
