Abstract:-
This paper deals with the synoptic survey of the delineation of one of the most fundamental human relationship i.e. marital relationship by various Indian women novelists. The delineation of this marital relationship reflects the essential character of the milieu and also the drama of individual’s life shaped and enacted largely within its matrix. The novels of initial women writers like Kamla Markandaya reveal tradition bound women protagonists pitted against the patriarchal set up. The very virtues of self-sacrifice and practical wisdom enable them to retain conjugal harmony and relationship at all costs. On the other hand, novelists like Shobha De and Namita Gokhale reflect totally aberrant and deviant women who flout all norms and are totally unguided by any positive moral vision. The protagonists of Nayantara Sehgal strive and tend to break free to find oxygen of freedom, but somehow fail to reintegrate with the society. It is in the novels of later novelist like that of Anita Desai and Shashi Deshpande that this balanced, holistic and affirmative view of life is reflected through the changing nuances of marital relationships. The phenomenon of marital relationship in the novels of Anita Desai is a process of self-realization, a psychological journey depicted in terms of human relationships. The disharmony in their relations compels them to revolt against the absurdities of their existence but the heightened level of self -realization in some of her later protagonists enables them to develop a more flexible attitude. They are self-respecting and responsible women who tend to compromise and reintegrate with the society but at a new level of awareness and self-assertion.
