Abstract: ABSTRACT Learners need to understand sociolinguistic competence in writing a formal letter as a writing skill among ESL undergraduate learners. They should understand the appropriate use of language in various social situations because incompetence could cause misunderstandings and miscommunication. This paper examines the implicit nature of sociolinguistic skills in focusing on the written communication skills needed for ESL learners. The paper also focuses on the awareness of written communication, considering the sociolinguistics competence among ESL undergraduate writers. Some social factors, such as situation, context, and social setting, play a vital role in understanding the concept of sociolinguistic competence in letter writing among ESL undergraduate learners. However, using the second language appropriately, writing is difficult for ESL learners. The aim is to determine the learners involved in this writing task, that is, letter writing, which produced better texts in terms of organization and appropriacy in a given piece of writing. Learners need to understand the importance of organizing their ideas and the appropriate use of language required for writing a job letter. This paper focuses on the data analysis of 84 samples which highlights the above-mentioned aspects of letter writing. The findings of this study can assist ESL learners in developing their sociolinguistic competence in their writing skills.
Keywords: Keywords: Sociolinguistic competence, letter writing, skills, ESL undergraduate learners.
