Abstract: The Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act, 1994 was enacted to prevent the misuse of prenatal diagnostic techniques for sex determination and to eliminate female foeticide in India. The Act prohibits the use of ultrasound machines to determine the sex of an unborn child, except in certain medical cases. The implementation of the PCPNDT Act in Himachal Pradesh has been mixed. On the one hand, the state has taken some positive steps to implement the Act, such as setting up a state-level PCPNDT Cell and training healthcare professionals on the provisions of the Act. On the other hand, there are still some challenges to the effective implementation of the Act, such as a lack of awareness among the public, poor infrastructure, and inadequate monitoring and enforcement mechanisms. This research paper examines the implementation of the PCPNDT Act in Himachal Pradesh, with a focus on the perspectives and challenges faced by various stakeholders, including government officials, healthcare professionals, and civil society organizations. The paper finds that while there has been some progress in implementing the Act, there are still a number of challenges that need to be addressed in order to reduce female foeticide in the state.
Keywords: Keywords: PCPNDT Act, female foeticide, ultrasound.
