According to WHO estimates 3.8 million children aged less than five die each year from diarrhoea and ARI.¹The largest annual event for hand hygiene is Global Handwashing Day, celebrated on 15 October. It is endorsed by governments, international institutions, civil society organizations, non- governmental organizations, private companies and individuals, and commemorated around the globe to make hand hygiene a habitual practice.Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Programme Handwashing.Objectives: The aim of the study is to assess the knowledge and attitude regarding handwashing among mothers of under five children in pediatric ward KGMU , Lucknow.Methodology:The research approach was quantitative and non experimental study .we used cross sectional research design to assess the knowledge and attitude regarding hand washing among mothers of under five children in pediatric OPD KGMU.Sample size was 170 selected using non-probability convenient sampling technique.Result:Total 170 subjects were included in the study .Maximum were aged between 26-30yrs(74%). Graduates were (70%) .More females were self employed (149%) having monthly income between 500- 1000 (60%). Joint family was higher in number (94%) more belonging to rural area ( 86%) and having Hindu religion (125%). More families were having one children (108%). Pre exposure was done on (131%) families. The common source of water was tap water (156%). Facility for handwashing(sink) was present (113%) . Gastric disease was not so common (43%). Number of children attending school were (102%) Facility for drinking water was present (141%).Conclusion:The results of the study reveals that maximum subjects 124(72.94%) have positive attitude towards handwashing followed by 42(24.70%) have neutral attitude and 4(2.35%) have negative attitude regarding handwashing.
