Abstract: BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Diabetes mellitus is a silent disease and is now recognized as one of the fastest growing threats to public health in almost all countries of the world. Every 5th person who suffer from diabetes in the world today is an Indian For effective management of diabetes, patients must be actively involved in their care: this requires performance of many complex self-care behaviors including lifestyle modifications (such as dietary control, regular exercise and psychosocial coping skills)and medical self-care (medication use and self-monitoring of blood glucose OBJECTIVES: 1.To assess the pre-test knowledge regarding self-care practices among patients with Type 2 Diabetes mellitus.2.To evaluate the effectiveness of structured teaching programme regarding self-care practices among patients withType2 Diabetes mellitus.3.To find the association between pretest level of knowledge on self-care practices among patients with Type2 diabetes mellitus with selected demographic variables. DESIGN: One group pretest-posttest design (pre-experimental design) was selected for the study. SUBJECTS: The participants were 60 Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus from a selected rural area, Bengaluru. SAMPLING METHOD: A purposive sampling technique was used. DATA COLLECTION TOOL: A structured knowledge questionnaire was used to collect data from the subjects. DATA ANALYSIS: The obtained data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics The level of significance was set at 0.05 levels. RESULT In the present study, Majority 35(58.33%) of respondents had inadequate knowledge, 25(41.66%) patients with Type 2 Diabetes mellitus had moderate knowledge regarding self care practices and no one has adequate knowledge regarding self care practices. In the present study, the posttest knowledge level on self-care practices among patients with Type2 diabetes mellitus. Majority 96.66% of them had moderate knowledge xiv (51-75%) scores, 3.33% of them had adequate knowledge (>75%) scores and none of them had inadequate knowledge (≤50%) score in posttest regarding self-care practices. The overall pretest posttest and enhancement of mean knowledge scores on Self care practices. It reveals that the post test mean knowledge score 18.7 was higher than the pre test mean knowledge score 13.73 among patients with Type2 diabetes mellitus. The obtained ‘t’ value (39) is greater than the table value. This is significant at 0.05 level (p<0.05). Hence the stated hypothesis was accepted. Further, the paired t-test value (39*) shows statistical significance at level of p<0.05 with df (59), establishing the effectiveness of STP. The Chi-square test was carried out to determine the association between the pretest knowledge and socio-demographic variables such as age, gender, religion, marital status, educational status, occupational status, family monthly income, dietary pattern, family history of Diabetes mellitus , Lifestyle and previous knowledge and source of information. Out of which Age (χ 2= 6.65*) and Gender (χ 2= 4.28*) were found to be significant where as other socio demographic variables such as religion ,marital status, educational status, occupational status, family monthly income, dietary pattern, family history of Diabetes mellitus Lifestyle and previous knowledge regarding Self care practices was found to be not significant with the pretest knowledge level of Patients . Hence research hypotheses (H2) is Rejected. It is evident that there is no association between the pretest knowledge and socio-demographic variables except age and gender. CONCLUSION: This research revealed that there is a significant difference in knowledge regarding self-care practices among patients withType2 Diabetes mellitus. The study statistically proved that there is an association between knowledge level and selected socio demographic variables
