Abstract: As conventional oral dosage form possesses low bioavailability, less gastric retention time due to their rapid gastric transition from stomach. The drug having narrow absorption window in GIT when administered by oral route are often limited by poor bioavailability due to incomplete drug release and short residence time at site of absorption. So, it require more strength of the drug. The Novel drug delivery systems (NDDS) in the form of gastro-retentive (GR) systems such as floating systems, high-density, mucoadhesive system, swellable system, have been developed to provide sustain delivery of drugs having prolonged gastric retention time that enhance the bioavailability drugs by increasing absorption window. Liquid oral dosage form is more prone to have low bioavailability because they eliminated from stomach in very quick rate. To overcome these problems like immediate release and short gastrointestinal residence of liquids, formulation of oral in-situ gels shows good bioavailability with moderate strength of drug. The oral in situ gel dosage form is in the form of liquid before administration, when it comes contact with gastric fluids it converted into the gel which has low density than that of gastric fluids so it floats over that fluids. In this review we have discussed the various approaches to produce gastric retention of drug delivery system with discussion on floating in-situ gel system for stomach specific drug delivery system. As it offers several advantages like prolong and sustained action in comparison to conventional drug delivery system and increase bioavailability of drug as well as produce patient compliance by reducing dosing frequency.
