Abstract

Hypertension is a long-term condition in which blood pressure in arteries is persistently elevated. High blood pressure usually causes no symptoms. However, long-term hypertension is a major risk factor for stroke, coronary heart disease, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, peripheral artery disease, blindness, chronic kidney disease, and dementia. The Heart Smart Diet meal plan focuses on foods that promote heart health, including fruits and vegetables rich in omega-3 fatty acids, whole grains, lean chicken, and fish such as salmon and tuna. Limiting saturated and trans fats is an important step in lowering blood cholesterol and reducing the risk of coronary artery disease. The objective of the study is to assess the effectiveness of planned teaching programme on Heart Smart Diet among hypertensive clients. A quantitative research approach with pre-experimental one group pre-test post-test design was adopted. 60 hypertensive clients were selected by using non-probability purposive sampling technique. Results revealed that the knowledge of the hypertensive clients regarding Heart Smart Diet has increased after the implementation of planned teaching programme. Hence, the study results proved that the planned teaching programme was effective in improving the knowledge regarding Heart Smart Diet among hypertensive clients.
