Abstract: Chemists are increasingly exploring environmentally friendly ionic liquids as safer alternatives to traditional organic solvents, aiming to reduce their environmental impact. Characterized by salt-like structures comprising cations and anions, ionic liquids provide a viable solution for enzyme-catalyzed reactions, offering superior yields, increased capacities, enhanced recyclability, greater stability, efficient recovery, and cost-effectiveness. These features make ionic liquids crucial for industrial applications. Furthermore, significant interest has arisen in their applications across fields such as nanotechnology, polymer science, electrochemistry, environmental chemistry, pharmaceutical medicinal chemistry, and biochemistry. Materials and techniques utilizing ionic liquids are renowned for their sustainability and efficiency. As designer solvents, ionic liquids can be tailored in their physicochemical properties to optimize performance for specific uses. This review outlines the steady progress and promising prospects of ionic liquids across various scientific domains, presenting the advancements, growth, and potential developments of ionic liquids in a cohesive manner, including their physicochemical properties and illustrative applications.
