Abstract: This study explores the socio-cultural, legal, and healthcare challenges faced by the LGBTQIA+ community in India, with a focus on the impact of decriminalizing homosexuality through the 2018 Supreme Court ruling. While India’s ancient culture recognized diverse gender identities, colonial laws such as Section 377 criminalized same-sex relationships, leading to decades of discrimination and stigma. Despite legal progress, including the decriminalization of gay sex, LGBTQIA+ individuals continue to face significant societal challenges, including discrimination in employment, healthcare, and personal relationships. The research employs a qualitative methodology, utilizing interviews with 30 LGBTQIA+ individuals from urban and rural India to understand their lived experiences. The study highlights the role of intersectionality, with participants expressing the compounded difficulties of being part of marginalized gender and sexual identities. Data was analyzed using thematic analysis, revealing persistent barriers in mental health, healthcare, and marriage equality. The findings indicate a need for continued advocacy, legal reform, and more inclusive healthcare policies. This research contributes to the literature by addressing gaps in studies on bisexual, asexual, and intersex communities, and calls for further studies to assess the long-term impact of legal and social changes on LGBTQIA+ individuals in India.
