Abstract: ABSTRACT Purpose • Mango anthracnose is a major fungal post-harvest disease that affects the mango quality and marketability which is caused by the fungus, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. During post-harvest, chemical fungicides were used during the past few years despite the fact that it poses harmful effects to our environment. With the growing interest in a sustainable and safer way in solving this problem, this study explored the potential of Virgin Coconut Oil as an eco-friendly protective coating for mangoes during post-harvest as it is already proven that VCO has its antifungal properties. Procedures • This study utilized Potato dextrose agar (PDA), a standard medium consisting of 20grams dextrose, 20 grams agar, 250 grams potatoes, and 1000 ml of distilled water. In Vitro and In Vivo were performed in this experiment using Complete Randomized Design with five treatments, replicated three times with five samples per replicate to assess the antifungal efficacy of VCO at different concentrations. The data gathered was analyzed through ANOVA test and differences among the treatment means were compared with the use of Least Significant Differences. Observations/Data/Results • The results of the In Vitro test demonstrated that higher concentrations of VCO (at 30% and 50%) significantly inhibited fungal growth, although it did not surpass the effect of Mancozeb, a conventional chemical fungicide. However, in the In Vivo test, the 50% VCO concentration was observed to be slightly more effective than Mancozeb in reducing the lesion diameter. Conclusion • The findings suggest that VCO, at optimal concentrations, has a potential of being a supplementary treatment in maintaining postharvest mango quality. This is also the first study to report the efficacy of VCO against anthracnose on post-harvest mango.
