With the advent of numerous cloud vendors, enterprises are adopting multi-cloud strategies to prevent vendor
lock-in, control costs, comply with regulations, and increase service availability. However, the realization of cross-cloud
interoperability adds a lot of architectural and operational complexity. This review offers a principled and thorough
analysis of the design patterns of scalable multi-cloud interoperability for the context of large enterprises. It classifies and
describes design patterns for identity federation, API orchestration, data replication, observability, and compliance. The
paper also provides the theoretical models, block diagrams, experimental results, and an overview of the recently
proposed techniques. It ends with a perspective on AI-based pattern automation, decentralized governance, and
interoperability-as-a-service. By combining the empirical academic insights with industrial experience, the review
provides system architects, DevOps engineers, and researchers with the necessary tools and perspectives to design future-
proofed enterprise systems for multi-cloud.
