This study introduces SALIN (System for Automated Local Indigenous Navigation), a real-time translation application whose name is derived from the Tagalog word “salin,” meaning “translate.” Designed to bridge communication gaps between indigenous Blaan and Tboli speakers and non-indigenous users in Tupi, South Cotabato, SALIN addresses social exclusion caused by language barriers. It enables native speakers to communicate and learn common regional languages while helping non-speakers understand indigenous dialects. Utilizing AI for context-aware voice and text translation, the system functions both online and offline to accommodate limited internet access in remote areas. Featuring a culturally sensitive, interactive interface, SALIN also allows community contributions to enrich an indigenous language dictionary, promoting cultural preservation. Usability testing with 100 participants—50 indigenous speakers and 50 non-speakers—produced positive results: 85% reported improved communication and understanding, 80% were satisfied with translation accuracy, and 90% valued SALIN’s role in preserving their language and culture. These findings demonstrate SALIN’s effectiveness in facilitating inclusive, culturally respectful communication and sustaining indigenous linguistic heritage, highlighting its potential as a vital tool for marginalized communities facing language barriers. The research finds that tools like SALIN can really help people connect and keep their culture relevant for future generations.
