Abstract: Zero Knowledge Proofs (ZKPs) are cryptographic protocols that allow one party to prove the validity of a statement without revealing any underlying information. This paper investigates the mathematical foundations of ZKPs, focusing on their reliance on number theory, group theory, and elliptic curve cryptography. We analyze popular ZKP systems such as zk-SNARKs and zk-STARKs, outlining their computational structures and assumptions. In parallel, the paper evaluates inherent risks in ZKP implementation, including cryptographic assumptions, scalability, and post-quantum security. A risk assessment framework is proposed to evaluate both theoretical vulnerabilities and real-world deployment challenges, offering recommendations for more secure ZKP adoption in privacy-preserving applications.
