Abstract: This paper examines the intricate interplay of identity, gender, and the complexities of urban Indian life as depicted in Raji Narasimhan’s Forever Free (1979). Set in the tumultuous landscape of post-independence India, the novel follows the protagonist’s journey through self-discovery and social negotiation, foregrounding the evolving roles of women amid rapid urbanisation. Through a close reading of the text, this study analyses how Narasimhan crafts characters grappling with alienation, societal expectations, and the burdens of tradition versus modernity. The research draws on feminist and postcolonial theoretical frameworks to explore the protagonist’s struggle for autonomy and meaning within the city’s fragmented world. By situating Forever Free within the broader context of Indian English literature, the paper highlights the novel’s contribution to ongoing discourses around gender and urban identity in South Asian writing. The findings suggest that Narasimhan’s work challenges conventional narratives, offering a nuanced portrayal of resistance, adaptation, and the search for selfhood. This analysis aims to expand critical engagement with Indian women’s writing and underscore the enduring relevance of Forever Free in contemporary literary studies.
