| Abstract: | At present, we are living in a deeply degenerated society where everything other than personal gain has lost its significance. In the pursuit of self-interest, we have sacrificed our humanity, compassion, and moral values. Affection, love, care, empathy, and fellow feeling no longer hold much value in contemporary life. This self-centeredness sometimes assumes such a dreadful form that people do not hesitate to hurt even their parents, brothers, and sisters for the sake of their own interests. The renowned Bengali novelist Suchitra Bhattacharya has vividly portrayed this decaying social reality of the twenty-first century in her writings. Her novel *Ei Akasher Niche* presents a picture of conflict and confrontation among siblings driven by personal interests and selfish motives. Here, no one is willing to make sacrifices; each character remains firmly attached to his or her own decisions and desires. The primary objective of this paper is to explore, through a close reading of the novel, the moral degeneration, ethical decline, and hypocrisy that characterize the people of the twenty-first century. |
