Abstract: Microplastics, plastic particles smaller than 5 mm, are pervasive pollutants in water, posing significant ecological and human health risks. Conventional detection methods such as FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, and SEM, though accurate, are expensive, time-consuming, and unsuitable for on-site monitoring. This study presents the design and development of a cost-effective, portable sensor for rapid detection and quantification of microplastics using optical and fluorescence-based methods, with Nile Red staining for enhanced visualization. A standardized sample preparation protocol ensures reliable identification, while hardware-software integration enables real-time data acquisition, image processing, and result display. The sensor is calibrated and validated using standard microplastic samples, including polyethylene and polypropylene, demonstrating its potential as a practical field-deployable solution for environmental monitoring. The system addresses the limitations of conventional laboratory methods and offers a reliable approach for routine detection and semi-quantitative assessment of microplastic contamination in water.
