Abstract
The banking sector is a fundamental pillar of economic development, facilitating financial intermediation, mobilizing savings, supporting investments, and promoting economic growth. Despite remarkable technological advancements and financial innovation, banks worldwide continue to face numerous challenges that threaten operational efficiency, profitability, customer confidence, and financial stability. Rising non-performing assets, cybersecurity risks, digital fraud, regulatory pressures, climate-related financial risks, economic uncertainty, and increasing competition from financial technology companies have transformed the banking landscape. This article critically examines the major problems confronting modern banking institutions, their causes, economic consequences, and strategic solutions. It also explores the role of regulation, digital transformation, risk management, financial inclusion, and sustainable banking practices in strengthening the resilience of the banking industry.
