Abstract: Generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) has moved from the periphery of academic discussion to the centre of institutional strategy across universities worldwide. This paper examines how higher education institutions can harness these technologies purposefully, moving beyond ad hoc experimentation toward coordinated, value-driven adoption. A structured conceptual model — the Academic AI Acceleration Model (AAAM) — is introduced to guide universities through six interdependent pillars: executive leadership alignment, faculty capacity development, student AI competency, ethical governance, digital infrastructure, and an institutional culture of responsible innovation. The paper analyses the opportunities Gen AI creates for teaching, learning, scholarly research, and administrative efficiency, while critically examining risks including threats to academic integrity, cognitive overdependence, data privacy vulnerabilities, and systemic bias. A five-phase implementation pathway is proposed to help institutions progress systematically from awareness to institution-wide embedding. The article also identifies emerging trends — including AI-native campuses, human-AI collaborative scholarship, and competency-based education — likely to shape the next decade of higher education. By grounding technology adoption in ethical values and human-centred design, this study offers practical guidance for academic leaders committed to building future-resilient, learner-centred universities.
