The toxic, allergic reactions and non-biodegradability of synthetic dyes are compelling the people to think about natural dyes as an alternative. Natural dyes are eco-friendly, protective to skin and pleasing to the eyes. Natural dyes have weak association with textile fibre, which needs mordanting with mordants, for fixation of natural dyes on textile fibres. Five different plant samples were taken namely Justicia diffusa, Buddleja officinalis, Berberis nepalensis, Toona sinensis, and Juglans regia with the aim to study the effect of mordants on natural dyes procured from the samples and two mordants potash alum and copper sulphate were used in pre-mordaanting and post-mordanting processes. Depending on the type of mordants used and the mordanting process applied different shades were obtained when the natural dye was applied to the cotton fabric. Most of the dyed cloth showed variation in colour with the difference in mordants.
