Abstract: Concrete is the most widely used construction material after water in the world and ordinary Portland cement (OPC) is the major ingredient used in concrete. The production of cement releases large amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) to the atmosphere that significantly contributes to greenhouse gas emissions. In terms of reducing the global warming, the geo-polymer technology could reduce the carbon-di-oxide emission to the atmosphere caused by Cement about 80%. Alkali Activated Slag - Fly ash Concrete (AASFC) is a binding material formed by the polymerization of source materials containing amorphous forms of alumina and silica & fly ash in presence of Alkali activated solutions. The objective of the present study is to evaluate the workability and engineering properties of AASFC by using Processed Iron Slag as fine aggregate. In the present study the binder used is GGBFS (Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag) which is a by-product from iron and steel industry. Also, the sand is partially replaced by Processed Iron Slag which reduces usage of river sand. Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and Sodium Silicate (Na2Sio3) are used in alkaline activated solution. The performance of AASFC mixes for variations in Na2Sio3 /NaOH dosage, alkali solution/binder dosage and strength of sodium hydroxide solution has been illustrated. Mix design is done for M40 grade of concrete with alkaline liquid to binder ratio 0.4, varying Activator modulus (SiO2/Na2O) ratio (0.75, 1.25 and 1.75) and different Na2O dosage values (4%, 5% and 6%) for each of the mix. The strength value with these variations was determined. The experimental results indicate that it is possible to prepare AASFC Mixes with compressive strength above 40 MPa with good workability which is a preliminary requirement for application in rigid pavements. The experimental results indicate that Iron slag can be used as an alternative to sand as fine aggregate in alkali activated slag – fly ash concrete mixes for application in rigid pavements.
