Abstract: The post-World War II era presented a distinctive historical and political context for Indian cinema's evolution. During this period, cinematic neo-realism emerged as a transformative artistic movement, offering a path toward cultural renaissance in the aftermath of two monumental events: India's decolonization and partition, coupled with the war's devastating impact. Contemporary intellectuals and filmmakers increasingly recognized neo-realism as the most compelling artistic direction for the era. The paradigmatic portrayal of the artist's evolved role in neo-realist cinema, exemplified by the internationally celebrated film Bicycle Thieves (De Sica, 1948), resonated deeply with Indian intellectual circles as a blueprint for cultural renewal. This research examines the manifestations and stylistic influences of neo-realism within the multifaceted landscape of Indian cinema. The investigation employs a dual methodological framework, incorporating both intertextual analysis and examination of critical writings that reveal cinema theories and perspectives evidently shaped by neo-realist ideological principles and creative approaches.
