Poverty refers to the lack of adequate financial resources such that individuals, households and entire communities dove have the means to subsist or acquire the basic necessities for a flourishing life. It also means the state or condition in which people or communities lack the financial resources and essentials for a minimum standard of living, as such, their basic human needs cannot be met. People and families who live in poverty may go without proper housing, clean water, healthy food, and medical attention. In short terms, poverty simply refers to the state of being extremely poor. This study therefore aimed at analyzing the impact of poverty on social development in Mpongwe district of Copperbelt Province in Zambia. The study employed both the qualitative and quantitative methods and a descriptive survey design that sampled civil servants, unemployed youths, teachers and pupils. Data was obtained from the respondents by means of interviews and questionnaires. Frequency tables, graphs, figures and pie-charts were used to analyze the qualitative and quantitative data. Data was also analyzed by the use of softwares; Statistical Package for Social Sciences (version 26) and Microsoft Excel (version 16). The findings indicated that lack of economic activities, lack of education, high death rate, lack of basic needs among other factors had affected most of the residents in Mpongwe District. Other findings noted that pupils attributed poor living standard to lack of economic activities as they just depend on small-scale farming and charcoal burning. Therefore, the study recommended that there is need for the government to employ more agricultural extension officers in order to empower local people with different agricultural skills so that they can venture into different methods of farming. Additionally, there is also need to ensure that programs and projects in line with poverty alleviation are effectively implemented in Mpongwe District.
