Abstract
The impact of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) on healthcare utilization trends and service quality in Nigeria's Federal Capital Territory (FCT) is evaluated in this study. According to the study results, participation in NHIS has improved people's propensity to use preventative healthcare services and seek immediate medical attention. There are still differing opinions, though, regarding the rise in the number of trips to medical facilities and the decline in out-of-pocket costs. Additionally, the outcome demonstrates that NHIS has expanded access to a wider range of services and enhanced contacts with healthcare practitioners. However, there is significant discontent with the general standard of care as well as the accessibility of cutting-edge diagnostic procedures and therapies.
While there are improvements in communication with healthcare providers and reduced waiting times, access to specialized healthcare providers and adherence to treatment protocols are areas needing attention. To enhance the effectiveness of NHIS and address the identified challenges, the following recommendations among others are proposed: The government should start a sensitization campaign to raise awareness of the advantages of NHIS, increase the number of healthcare facilities, particularly in underserved areas, improve accessibility and reduce travel times, invest in mobile health units to serve remote areas so that even the most isolated populations can receive the healthcare services they need, ensure that healthcare providers receive ongoing training and professional development to improve their competency, professionalism, and interactions with patients, and invest in state-of-the-art diagnostic tools and modern medical equipment to improve the quality of care provided in NHIS-covered facilities.
