Over speeding is one of the root causes for many accidents. Identifying such violating vehicles in a city seems to be impractical due to the traffic conditions and other geographical situations. In a smart city, with speed limits assigned to confined areas, a receiver node in the sides of the road or the median seems to be an effective means of getting the alert signal from the vehicle transmitter unit. A mandatory transmitter unit in the vehicle in smart cities would be the main unit of this project. On the transmission side, we preprogram the speed limits for the given confined area and if the vehicle’s speed is greater than the mentioned speed, then the vehicle’s identity is sent to the receiver unit. The receiver unit installed in the medians or the sides of the road, contains a zigbee receiver unit consisting of a GSM modem to send messages to the nearby traffic control system. The alert message from the vehicle unit carries registration number of the vehicle along with latitude and longitude details using GPS. Thereby the traffic control officers can track the violators using WPAN technology. Analytics on the dataset of such vehicles collected from the traffic control unit provides strategic, tactical and operational insights along with decision-making by Business Intelligence that drives profitable business actions. In this project, dataset obtained is analyzed using one of the BI developer tools called “Power BI” and various dashboards have been developed and customized by displaying key performance indicators (KPI) meeting the specific needs.
