Kurt Vonnegut (1922-2007) was arguably one of the most popular exponents of postwar American fiction. He often relied on science fiction conventions to offer social commentary about the injustice, death and environmental degradation caused by rampant technological developments. As a POW during World War II, he witnessed the destruction of Dresden and struggled to make sense of it for more than two decades before revisiting his ordeal in Slaughterhouse-Five (1969). Ostensibly an anti-war novel, Vonnegut has also explored his favourite themes of determinism vs. free will and the modern individual's eternal struggle to make sense of his meaningless existence. The protagonist, Billy Pilgrim, is an everyman who exemplifies the condition of an individual trying to find a purpose for existing in an absurd world.
