People who practice a little bit of grammar hear a lot of these words, Halanta
and Hasanta. In grammatical study, there is a special place for Halanta or
Hasanta. The Halant sign (̖ ) determines whether a letter is voiced or
voiceless. However, there is a lot of confusion in the minds of primary
readers of grammar about Halanta. In fact, the first thing that comes to the
mind of a good reader who knows a bit of Bengali grammar and Sanskrit
grammar is, "Are Halanta and Hasanta the same thing?" Because the word
"Hasanta" is not used in the Paniniyan Grammar, the word "Halanta" is used
there. Again, the use of the word "Hasanta" is found in the Bengali grammar.
So what do we do here? What should we speak, Halanta or Hasanta? In this
essay, after solution of this confusion, the behavioral characteristics of
Halanta are discussed briefly, which can help the primary readers to
understand the basic concept of Halanta.
