Abstract: Foreign direct investment (FDI) is widely recognized as a pivotal catalyst for economic growth. Extensive scholarly research has delved into various facets of the intricate relationship between FDI and economic growth, with a particular focus on nations undergoing transition. In India, FDI inflows have surged since the liberalization of policies in the early 1990s. However, when evaluated as a percentage of GDP or overall investment, these inflows remain relatively modest, exerting a relatively minor influence on the country's economic expansion. This diverges markedly from the pivotal role that FDI has played in the economic development of rapidly emerging Asian economies such as those in the ASEAN region and China. Over the past few decades, the "FDI-Export" paradigm has been instrumental in propelling the rapid growth rates of countries like Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and China. India's notably lower FDI influx compared to its peer nations can be attributed to a combination of internal and external factors. A schism exists within the prevailing literature, with one faction underscoring FDI's significance as a critical source for bolstering production, efficiency, growth, and managerial expertise, while another group of scholars voices concerns about the negative repercussions of FDI inflows, labeling them as instruments of economic exploitation in developing countries. Hence, it becomes imperative to meticulously scrutinize the impact of FDIs on India's economic growth.
