Abstract: There is temporary closure of educational institutes all over the world to restrain the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic and India is not the exception. Most of the educational institutes and governments are unable to cope with the current scenario as it was not predicted. The COVID-19 is an opportunity to rethink about our teaching, learning and assessment pattern across all levels of education. It’s time to think about reforms in education system and increase transparency and trust in examination and assessment process. It’s time to prepare the new generation a way to brighter future. This paper is an attempt to understand the problems of students and their psychology to face the exam. The extensive survey is undertaken for collection of data and report is prepared on the basis of data collected through online questionnaire. The paper helps universities to understand the problems of the students as well as to decide the examination policy. Introduction In 2019, the new coronavirus emerged in Wuhan, China which resulted in a widespread COVID-19 pandemic across the globe. The year 2019 is the year of the pandemic. India is not an exception to the global pandemic which affects a large population of the world. The coronavirus pandemic has been linked to lacs of deaths worldwide. The countries most impacted by the epidemic are China, the USA, France, Italy, Spain, and China; India is not an exception. On January 30, 2020, the first case of the Corona Virus was detected in India. The corona virus outbreak has affected life all over the country. The Prime Minister of India called for a 14-hour Janata Curfew on March 22, 2020 to combat the disease. The government of India decided to implement nationwide lockdown as the number of cases began to rise. The greatest lockdown in history was declared by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 24, 2020, and it required 1.3 billion Indians to remain at home for 21 days. Due to the ongoing rise of infected patients, the Indian government decided to prolong the lockdown. Corona Virus and Lockdown in India The first case of the Corona Virus in India was reported on 30th January, 2020 which was originated from China. The figure of affected cases crossed 11,000 and caused deaths of more than 350 people. The outbreak of the Corona Virus has been declared an epidemic in India. Government has decided to close all the educational institutions and commercial establishments. On 22nd March, 2020 Prime Minister call people of India to observe Janata Curfew of 14-hour to fight with the epidemic. As the number of cases in India started increasing, the government decided to observe lockdown all over the country. On 24th March, 2020 Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the world’s largest lockdown asking 1.3 billion Indians to stay home for 21 days. First phase of Lockdown started from 25th March, 2020 and expected to end on 14th April, 2020. Before the first lockdown ends many state governments decided to extend the lockdown in their states till 30th April, 2020. As there is continuous increase in the cases of infected people government of India decided to extend the lockdown till 3rd May, 2020. Impact of Corona Virus on Education Assessment is a tool used to test aptitude, knowledge, ability, physical fitness, etc. of the learner. The purpose of these exams is to evaluate a student's competency in a particular area. Universities utilise grades or test results to decide which students should be admitted to their next course or professional programmes. Exam is crucial because it motivates students to acquire knowledge. Exams play a major role in a student's academic career. Students prefer to learn subjects which they find interesting and ignoring other subjects. Exams are significant to students in one sense, but universities with high student populations find it extremely difficult to manage the two examination cycles each year that the UGC requires under a semester system for students. Universities have an enormous burden ahead of them. 12,000 independent higher education institutions, 40,000 colleges, and more than 800 universities exist. Students are feeling uneasy this year because of the Corona Virus epidemic in the middle of March, the abrupt lockdown declared by the Maharashtra government, and the subsequent lockdown declared by the Indian government until April 15, 2020. Professional course admissions, placements, and other activities were also affected due to it. Even though the government is working tirelessly to prevent students from losing their academic standing, uncertainty persists. The government is making all the required preparations for academic regularisation. The global corona virus pandemic has had a negative impact on educational systems everywhere. To stop the virus from spreading, colleges, institutions, and schools are closed globally. But closing schools is a necessary first step in stopping or reducing local and community-level transmission. Most governments around the world have temporarily closed educational institutions in an attempt to contain the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. These nationwide closures are impacting over 91% of the world’s student population. Several other countries have implemented localized closures impacting millions of additional learners. According to UNESCO there are 1,57,52,70,054 affected learners which consist of 91.3% of total enrolled learners from 191 country-wide closures. The impact on education is likely to cause losses in terms of dropout rates and learning outcomes, especially in regions with low shock-resilience. Children have fewer opportunities of learning from home. Further, closure of schools is likely to lead to parents missing work, in order to stay at home and take care of the children. This also affects productivity, incurs loss in wages, consequently affecting the community and the economy as a whole. Impact of Corona Virus on Examinations in Maharashtra Most of the HEIs are following classroom teaching almost all over the country. There is increasing trend of using teaching aids such as LCD Projector, K-Yan, Google Classroom etc. but still it is not widely used by teachers and students. There are many universities and colleges in India which are still using traditional techniques of teaching. In many academic institutes although modern teaching aids are available but it is rarely used by the faculties. On 20th March, 2020, School Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad conveyed the Maharashtra Government’s decision to cancel the final examinations of Class 1st to 8th. Decision of taking exams of Class 9th and 11th was pending. On 12th April it was decided to cancel exams of class 9th and 11th and decided to allot marks as per first-semester performance and students will be promoted to next class.
