Abstract: BACKGROUND: Fixation of lumbar pedicles for different pathologies is increasing rapidly for the last few years. As the lumbar pedicles are thick and strong, they help in transmission of weight in lumbar spine. Because of this reason they are also used for stabilizing spine with the help of screws in various lumbar pathologies including fractures, malignancies and other conditions of spinal stability. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was conducted in the Department of Anatomy, Vardhman Mahavir Medical College and Safdarjung hospital on sixty dry adult fully ossified human lumbar vertebrae. The parameters included Pedicle cortical width, Pedicle cortical height, Pedicle cortical length and Interpedicular distance. The measurements were taken on both right and left sides and compared for any statistically significant side dimorphism. RESULTS: Pedicle cortical width ranged between 6 mm to 18.5 mm on both right and left sides. Pedicle cortical height ranged between 12mm to 16.5mm on the right side and 12.5mm to 15.5mm on the left side. Pedicle cortical length ranged between 10mm to 15mm on the right side and 11mm to 15mm on the left side. Interpedicular distance ranged between 17.5mm to25.5mm. The mean Pedicle cortical width was 9.71mm on right side and 10.56mm on left side. Mean Pedicle cortical length was 12.16mm on right side and 12.36 mm on left side. The mean Interpedicular distance was measured to be 20.98mm. CONCLUSIONS: Pedicle fixation may result in complications including radicular, duramater and vascular injury. They can be avoided by having in depth knowledge of morphometry of the pedicle and the anatomy of the neighbouring neurovascular structures.
