In this era of Artificial Intelligence (AI) where engineering field is ruling the world, civil engineering still has not sufficiently exposed to computer technology and softwares. It is important that in this field also softwares should be put to use as much as possible to cover the wide scope of civil engineering. This paper presents a new approach for automation of design process using Microsoft Excel VBA and Fortran 90. The main objective of these self-developed programs is to reduce the paper works and human errors which increases the productivity and decreases the repetitive manual works. This report describes the application of MS Excel VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) and FORTRAN (FORmula TRANslation) with a commercially available software STAAD.Pro for the design of foundation which is the most crucial part of any structure. The programs have been developed in order to satisfy all the relevant of IS Codes. This paper presents a comparative study of results obtained from MS Excel VBA, FORTRAN and STAAD.Pro.
