This study aims to investigate the antibacterial activity of lactic acid bacteria isolated from fermented dairy products against common milk borne pathogens. The agar well diffusion method are used to identify the antagonistic activity of lactic acid bacteria against E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhimurium and Listeria. In this study, lactic acid bacteria were isolated from fermented dairy products such as yoghurt, cheese and buttermilk using selective agar and milk borne pathogens were isolated from raw milk using selective agar such as SS agar, EMB agar, oxford agar and mannitol salt agar. Then this was identified using gram staining, biochemical tests. The few LAB were isolated and identified. They are Lactobacillus plantarum, from yoghurt and L. rhamnosus from cheese and L. lactis from buttermilk. L. lactis showed the largest inhibition zone against S. typhimurium and S. aureus as 17 and 13 mm, respectively and E. coli shows the inhibition zone as 14 mm and L. plantarum showed inhibition against E. coli and Listeria as 4 mm and 2 mm. L. rhamnosus showed inhibition against E. coli and S. aureus as 7 mm and 6 mm. The lactic acid bacteria showed inhibitory properties against milk borne pathogens and it produce various antimicrobial compounds includes organic acid, hydrogen peroxide, di acetyl. This research is evaluating the possible use of these LAB isolates in the pharmaceutical sector and it showed that the LAB inhibits milk borne pathogens and it can be used as an alternative type of antibiotic.
