Delhi has a population density of 29,259.12 persons per square mile, and the city’s traffic situation is no different. Severe bottlenecks are occurring on all major highways because of complex flow patterns and the varied nature of the traffic on the roads thereby increasing the accident rates. In order to combat poor lane discipline and high traffic density due to heterogeneous traffic flow, it is necessary to study stream of traffic, quality of roadways and the services it provides to the users. Level of service (LOS) is a quality indicator, quantifying the functional condition of a road traffic and presents it in the form of six LOS letters. Thus, this study examines the traffic flow on a four-lane split (two-way) sub-arterial urban road during peak and mid-hours on working and non-working days by estimating the level of service in diverse traffic conditions. Then the comparison and analysis between the LOS found manually and simulated LOS are carried out. It was clear that there was a close relationship between the two approaches since the simulated level of service produced by PTV VISSIM and the LOS produced by HCM were identical.
