Abstract: In field,soils with poor engineering properties are usually neglected for use as subgrade material even when they are readily available. However this has made it necessary for highway design engineers to seek different ways of making use of this category of soils. This study examines the impact of treating a soil with poor geotechnical characteristics with a bio-enzyme to see if it may be used as a subgrade material. The effect of different dosages of terrazyme enzyme on Compaction charactristics,Unconfined Compressive Strength test and California Bearing Ratio (CBR) were conducted to investigate the enhancement in soil strength. Data obtained from unconfined compressive strength test showed that the strength of enzyme stabilized soil has greatly improved in the presence of a small quantity of terrazyme. Pavement designers can employ the new proposed system of stabilization to possibly reduce pavement subgrade layer thickness.
