A DESCRIPTIVE STUDY TO ASSESS THE KNOWLEDGE REGARDING SELECTED MINOR AILMENTS OF NEWBORN AMONG PRIMIPARA MOTHERS IN SELECTED HOSPITAL OF AGARTALA WITH A VIEW TO DEVELOP AN INFORMATION BOOKLET
A descriptive study was included to assess the knowledge regarding selected minor ailments of newborn among primipara mothers in selected hospital of Agartala with a view to develop an information booklet. The main objective of the study was to assess the knowledge regarding selected minor ailments of newborn among primipara mothers. Conceptual frame work was used based on the general system theory developed by Von Bertalanlfy in 1968. A Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study sample of 60 primipara mothers who were admitting in postnatal ward, were selected by using purposive sampling technique. Data was collected by structured questionnaire to assess their demographic variables and knowledge respectively. The tool was validated by 6 experts from the department of Child Health Nursing. The tool for assessing knowledge was found reliable r=0.7 (under the range). The statistical analysis was done by using mean & standard deviation to assess the knowledge score of primipara mothers regarding minor ailments of newborn. The chi-square test to findout the association between knowledge scores of primipara mothers with their selected demographic variables. The data showed that 80% of mothers having inadequate knowledge, 20% of mothers having moderately adequate knowledge level regarding Minor ailments of Newborn. None of the primipara mothers had adequate knowledge level. Over all analysis revealed that the mean knowledge score of the primipara mothers on knowledge questionnaire and management questionnaire was respectively 8.06 and 7.46 with SD of 2.93 and 2.86. The mean percentage was 51.93 and 48.07. The findings revealed that the mothers had inadequate knowledge level on minor ailments of newborn. There was no significant association between knowledge of the primipara mothers on minor ailments of newborn and demographic variables such as age, religion, educational status, type of family, family income/month, occupation of mother, area of residence previous source of information, educational programme. The study concluded that knowledge of primipara mothers on Minor ailments of newborn was inadequate. Study has implications on nursing practices, nursing research and nursing administration. The study can be repeated as a comparative study conducted between rural and urban mothers regarding Minor ailments of newborn.
