Biomedical Waste (BMW) generated from healthcare hospitals and laboratories needs to be managed properly. As most hazardous waste is generated by the hospital and diagnostic laboratories which impose potential risks to the healthcare workers and the environment. If such biomedical waste is not managed properly, it may cause the spread of contagious diseases like TB, HIV/AIDs, and Covid-19. The lack of awareness and poor practices may lead to improper management of the laboratory waste which also causes hazardous effects on the environment. Though we have the organization to monitor and track the management of laboratory waste generated from the laboratories but protocols and policies must be applied to manage and handle the laboratory waste to avoid health risks and in our organizations, such as those in Hyderabad, the implementation is not efficient as it should be. BMW in branded high laboratories management is better than the public and local private labs. Poor monitoring and negligence of laboratory waste may cause fatal effects on human health. In this paper, the aim of the study is to assess the knowledge and practices regarding the laboratory waste management of public and private laboratory staff of Hyderabad and to assess the attitude of laboratory staff towards needle stick injury.
Material and Methods: The study is based on an open and closed structured questionnaire. The questionnaire was distributed among the doctors, pathologists, managers, laboratory receptionists, laboratory technicians, and sanitary personnel. Data were analyzed by the SPSS software to evaluate the results.
Results: It is concluded that 65% of private laboratory staff has adequate knowledge regarding BMW while public laboratory staff has 60%. While private laboratory staff practices 62% proper biomedical waste disposal as compared to 58% of public laboratory staff. Attitude towards the needle stuck injury in private laboratories seemed 75% with proper documentation and reports while the public is 59% with unsatisfied documentation.
