Precision farming has undergone a major transformation with the advent of the Internet of Things (IoT) and smart sensor technology. These developments have resulted in the collection of real-time data from agriculture. However, the true potential of this information can be exploited using predictive analytics. Using data analytics tools, farmers can gain better insights to make informed decisions and predict key factors such as harvest time, disease risk, pest and yield. This article explores the role of predictive analytics in smart agriculture and highlights its benefits in making agriculture more manageable, predictable and sustainable. Additionally, we discuss specific solutions such as the Crop Performance platform and SoilScout, which exemplify the use of predictive analytics in agriculture.
