For a very long time, the Indian and Chinese medical systems have employed Tribulus terrestris (family Zygophyllaceae), often referred to as puncture vine, Gokshur, or Gokharu, to treat a wide range of illnesses. Many chemical components, including alkaloids, steroidal saponins, flavonoids, and flavonol glycosides, are present in its different portions and are significant in medicine. Its actions include hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antispasmodic, anticancer, antibacterial, anthelmintic, larvicidal, immunomodulatory, antidiabetic, absorption-enhancing, hypolipidemic, cardiotonic, and anticariogenic. Its biological activity and the pharmacology of its extracts have been demonstrated by a significant amount of study conducted over the previous few decades. The creation of a database for additional research on the identified phytochemical is the goal of this review.
In the coming years, Gokhru (Tribulus terrestris) shows promise in various domains. Progress in medicinal research is anticipated to uncover fresh therapeutic uses, while extensive clinical trials might confirm its effectiveness and safety, potentially integrating it into complementary healthcare. Its probable inclusion in dietary supplements due to perceived health advantages could boost its role in the nutraceutical industry. Enhanced cultivation methods and quality checks may be explored to meet the escalating demand for herbal remedies. Continued exploration of its bioactive elements may unveil new compounds with diverse health benefits, reinforcing its relevance in traditional and contemporary healthcare systems
