Regarding the qualitative and quantitative coverage of the internet and social media in modern
topics, notable shifts have been seen across national boundaries. Since young people use social
media primarily for communication and amusement, it has become an essential part of their digital
interactions. In addition, lectures and teachings are now delivered via social media. But social
media has advantages and disadvantages. When children and teenagers are not properly watched,
they take in a lot of bad information from these platforms. One of the negative consequences of
excessive use of social media is mental health decline. This study investigated the connection
between the rise in mental health issues in Punjab, India, and social media use.
The 34-person sample size of Lovely Professional University's youth comprised the population
under consideration for this investigation. Data from different students—both those who live on
campus and those who live off—from different departments was gathered using a closed-ended
survey form. It was discovered that pupils were present on a number of well-known social media
sites, including Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok. There are group conversations and
calls, private chats, media sharing, advertisements, likes, comments, follows, and pages to peruse
on these social networking pages.
According to the study, privacy was the least important factor, while amusement was the most
important. The results indicated that the largest predictors of poor mental health were likes,
comments, and follows (total utility = 56.24). "Games" was the least useful aspect (total utility =
2.56). The researcher advises social media users to exercise caution when interacting with features
such as likes, comments, followers, media, and posts because that is where they are subjected to
cyberbullying, disturbing content, and harassment that causes users to doubt their own worth or
self-esteem. Out of a fear of being left out, users compare themselves to others and engage in a
variety of competitive behaviors in an effort to stay relevant on social media and gain lots of likes
and followers.
