Background:
Healing following gingivectomy is painful as healing takes place by secondary intention. Low level laser therapy (LLLT) had been used to stimulate gingival wound healing following gingivectomy. LLLT works on the principle of biostimulation/biomodulation effect, which results in increased collagen synthesis, fibroblast differentiation and angiogenesis. As LLLT is absorbed in sub cellular level and is capable of penetrating deeper into tissues facilitating gingival wound healing.
Aim & Objective:
The purpose of this split mouth controlled clinical trial was to assess the effect of low level laser therapy (LLLT) on gingival wound healing after conventional gingivectomy.
Materials and Method:
Twenty-five patients having gingival enlargement were included in the study. Selected patients were randomly divided into two groups by using chit method. Surgical gingivectomy was performed in both groups. Following gingivectomy, test group was subjected to low level laser therapy immediately and on 7th post-operative day. Pain response was assessed by using visual analogue scale on 1st, 3rd and 7th post-operative day. Gingival wound healing was assessed by using Landry healing index on 7th, 21st and 30th post-operative day.
Results:
On intergroup comparison, control group showed better improvement in scores of visual analogue scale and wound healing index on the first two follow up days and results were same in both the groups on the 3rd follow up day.
Conclusion:
Within the limitations of this study it was observed that LLLT has no added beneficial effect on wound healing following conventional gingivectomy.
