Folic acid and cobalamin are B-group vitamins that are required for several cellular activities. Megaloblastic anemia is caused by a lack of one or both of these vitamins. This disorder is the result of poor DNA synthesis, which prevents nuclear division. This causes asynchronous maturation between the nucleus and cytoplasm of erythroblasts, causing insufficient red blood cell synthesis and intramedullary hemolysis which accounts for the megaloblast's large size. Megaloblastic anemia can be diagnosed through morphological and laboratory findings. This article examines the cause and clinical aspects of megaloblastic anemia, emphasizing the significance of vitamin B12 and folate in its therapy.
