Dyslipidemias are currently a prevalent issue among patients with a serious risk for the onset and progression of cardiovascular diseases. Elevated levels of triglycerides (TGs), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and total cholesterol (TC) are indicative of these disorders. To achieve the therapeutic goal of regulated blood lipid levels, hyperlipidemia can be treated with drugs (hypolipidemic agents), a change in lifestyle, or both. This review explores the current treatment strategy, emphasising the equalization of these parameters to improve patient's overall quality of life. We identify ailments, such as familial hypercholesterolemia, that require alternative treatment approaches by conducting a thorough examination of clinical studies. The main goal of this review is to compile the knowledge currently available about medications that have the potential to drastically transform the treatment of dyslipidemia. The focus of current dyslipidemia treatment guidelines is on reducing low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) to a certain extent, based on an individual's risk of developing ASCVD. Apart from ezetimibe and statins, other LDL-C-targeting medications have been approved recently by regulatory agencies. We will also go through recent studies on novel lipid biomarkers such as proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9), which is a crucial molecule that controls the metabolism of low-density lipoproteins (LDL) and sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P), one of the most significant mediators of the function of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) particles.
