Quinolinium fluorochromate is a potential oxidant of Cr(VI) has been employed in oxidation kinetics of þ-chloro, and þ-nitro mandelic acids in aqueous acetic acid medium. The kinetic data show that the reactions follow first-order kinetics with respect to [QFC]. The reaction rate indicates direct proportionality with respect to low [substrate] which tends to become zero-order at higher concentrations of the organic substrate. The rate is first-order in concentration of H+ ion, and follows of the form kobs = a + b [H+]. The stoichiometry confirmed the formation of one mole each of þ-chloro benzaldehyde and p-nitro benzaldehyde as the products of oxidation in case of two substrate under investigation respectively. The reaction is believed to proceeds by the scission of C-C bond, which is broken during the course of oxidation via intermediate complex.
