Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a major health issue in the world. It is a group of metabolic disorders which can leads to enormous medical and socioeconomic consequences. It is a group of metabolic disorder characterised by increased levels of glucose in the blood (hyperglycaemia) which occur due to defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. The worldwide prevalence of diabetes mellitus is increasing in both developed and developing countries. It is estimated that around 600 million individuals worldwide will be affected by DM in 2030. Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is considered as a serious potential complication of DM, and occurs due to damaged neurons and small blood vessels of the retina. DR significantly increased with age, it was higher in females , and significantly increased with a longer duration of diabetes, hyperglycaemia, hypertension, dyslipidemia, nephropathy and smoking. The objective of the study was to assess the awareness regarding Diabetic Retinopathy and its Risk Factors among diabetic patients. A quantitative research approach with descriptive design was adopted. 260 diabetic patients were selected by using non-probability purposive sampling technique. The result of the study revealed that majority 138(53.1%) of diabetic patients had low awareness, followed by 81(31.1%) had moderate awareness and remaining 41(15.8%) of diabetic patients had high awareness regarding Diabetic Retinopathy. Body mass index, duration of DM, uncontrolled diabetes, history of hypertension, history of diabetic kidney disease, history of eye surgery (cataract), history of diabetes during pregnancy (if female), history of tobacco consumption, perform physical activity to control diabetes, blood pressure, HbA1c value, level of serum total cholesterol and level of triglycerides were identified as risk factors of diabetic retinopathy. The chi square value showed that no statistical significant association of awareness of diabetic retinopathy with demographic variables and shows Significant association of risk factors with respect to body mass index, duration of diabetes mellitus, uncontrolled diabetes, history of hypertension, history of diabetic kidney disease, history of eye surgery (cataract), history of diabetes during pregnancy (if female), history of tobacco consumption, perform physical activity to control diabetes, blood pressure, HbA1c value, level of serum total cholesterol and level of triglycerides with the demographic variables at 0.05 level of significant. Hence the results proved that majority of the diabetic patients had low awareness about diabetic retinopathy, and lesser patients were aware about treatment and eye screening. This emphasizes the need for increasing awareness about diabetic retinopathy, its risk factors, and treatment options for diabetic retinopathy and should be motivated for eye screening to prevent from blindness related to diabetic retinopathy.
